Illustrate the fear of a patient who puts off a routine cancer screen. Those who do go to a screening, and it's positive and reassuring, may reduce some of their anxiety toward future screenings, making them feel more confident. As such, their perceived cancer risk may be potentially more realistic and they may also be more likely to engage in conversations regarding screening with their peers and utilize healthcare services when appropriate concerns arise. This kind of short cycle details how one experience can get pulled through the churn of risk perception, emotional response, and behavior in a way similar to circuitry, creating an experiential map for both practitioners and researchers.
Awareness of something puts it on the map: At a very basic level, knowing about something activates it in mind and radar screen but awareness alone is not sufficient; it predicts cancer information-seeking behavior only if risk is perceived and processed emotionally. Research in public health long ago has showed that people can know the facts of cancer but not see it personally relevant or emotionally salient (Weinstein, 1987; Brewer et al., 2007). That is, in the PsyCaB Model, awareness increases engagement potential, but susceptibility and severity determine whether that potential will orient intentionally toward concern or activation. When risk is perceived as low or abstract, awareness does not generally translate into preventive or help-seeking behavior.
One of them is affective reactions which serves as a mediating force in the model. Whether fear, anxiety, uncertainty and expected loss, respectively, will either initiate protective behavior or avoidance and decline is likely determined by emotion regulation skills and social supports (Leventhal et al., 1997; Holland et al., 2015). The PsyCaB Model acknowledges the impact of psychological preparedness on whether people would seek out information, discuss cancer and engage with screening and treatment services. Cognitive '"understanding" can be interrupted by unsupported or stigmatized emotional response.
By framing the social significance of cancer, stigma harms these procedures. Drawing on stigma theory, the model conceptualizes stigma as social processes that inhibit disclosure, promote silence, and heighten perceived social consequences of cancer diagnosis (Goffman, 1963; Link & Phelan, 2001).
